Patient Story 2
I started going to Shepherd’s Clinic around the beginning of July. When I came I was in pretty bad shape. I was in a lot of pain from my back and sciatic leg pain and having trouble breathing and was getting short of breathe with the least little exertion. I was depressed and had 2 months earlier tried to commit suicide because of being in pain, not being able to work, being broke and having some big problems with chores around the house that I could no longer do.
Maria the Doctor I saw and Leona, from the very beginning were very patient with me. I was a mess. I was having trouble with transportation and Leona came to pick me up and take me home from my doctors and counseling appointments. Not only did Shepherd’s Clinic treat my pain they arranged counseling for me too. Then Ebony and her friend Mike came out to my house and helped me mow my lawn which was at least 1 1/2 feet tall in places and cut down many small trees and bushes that had begun growing because the lawn hadn’t been cut in so long. I recently rented a truck to haul off garbage that had accumulated here and Ebony came over on very short notice and helped me load and haul trash to the dump and unload it there. With her help we were able to get the trash all hauled off.
Shepherd’s Clinic and especially Leona and Carol have helped me get some of my medication free and arranged for me to get a heart stress test and ultrasound at no cost to me at Rex Hospital at which time they found I have leaky heart valves. I was very relieved because I had my heart checked several times over the last 5 years and they never found anything and yet I could feel the pain in my chest and knew something else was wrong because every little thing makes me run out of breathe to the point I have to stop and rest after 5 or 10 minutes of work and feel awful when I get short of breathe. Thanks to Shepherd’s and Rex hospital now I know what is wrong and am getting treatment for it! They have arranged for me to see a heart specialist and he prescribed a cholesterol drug and nitro glycerin patches to help my heart get more oxygen.
They have done all this at very little cost to me. I think I have only paid $5.00 on 2 occasions. My wife is the only one in our house working and we have a 20 year old son with Aspergers syndrome who has not been able to learn to drive or get and keep a job so money is very tight and without Shepherd’s Clinic I would not have been able to afford to see a doctor or pay for several of my medications or have transportation to see the doctor.
I am extremely grateful to everyone at the clinic for all their help especially Leona, Ebony and Carol who have gone out of their way to help me get treatment, pay for medication, get rides to treatment and solve some of my problems around the house that were keeping me very depressed.
They are a blessing and thanks to their help things are slowly getting better for me and my family. Thanks to not being in so much pain I can do much more than I was able to before and my depression has gotten much better. I feel like a heavy weight has been lifted off of me!
I would like to thank them all from the bottom of my heart and say that Shepherd’s Clinic is a great place with people that care and really help you with more than just prescribing medication, they help you get your life back in order!
